Q: I have an 11 month old daughter that her pediatrician says has a yeast infection on her skin. About two months ago Layla was constantly itching, she was getting daily rashes that wouldn’t go away (redness  and swelling), the sides of her thighs were dark and kind of swelling also. She was very annoyed by diaper changes. Dr. prescribed something that begins with an E….I forget what its called but its also prescribed for stuff like jock itch and ringworm. I tried it and she broke out all over so stopped after 1st application.

I nurse Layla 100% which also scared me because I might have a yeast infection myself & be passing it on to her. I also took anti-biotics after my pregnancies due to a vaginal infection so I’m sure it could have come from that also. I do not give my daughter any probiotics and I only feed her either home cooked meals or sometimes store bought baby food. No juice, no water and no formula.

But she eats a lot of cooked rice, mashed fruits. No meat, no yogurt or cheese. Snacks on crackers (plain or chocolate) and puffed snacks. What can I give my child for her yeast infection & rash?

A:
First, regarding Layla’s diet, you need to remove rice, crackers, puffed snack foods, and sweet smashed fruit, these foods can add to the yeast issue as they provide food sources for them.  Give her avocado and coconut (fresh & oil). NO grains at all is the ideal way to starve out the yeast in her body.  Offer cooked, mashed or blended veggies, as much as she will eat, and mixed with a healthy antifungal fat like Nutiva coconut oil.
Ghee is another great fat to use.

Add homemade bone broths to her diet daily (see recipes), coconut oil and fresh coconut daily if possible, and pastured chicken liver.  If she won’t eat liver, since she isn’t eating meat, then try blending cooked liver into a liquid first and then mix it into the beans (or if you can get her to eat hamburger) with onions and egg, spices, etc.  Chicken liver is mild in taste in comparison to beef liver.   Get liver from pastured animals, organic if possible.  Liver is a great source of nutrients, especially vitamin A, which is helpful for immune system and growth & development.

This type of diet will help her body be better at eliminating candida, and help her with her intestinal healing (damaged from the yeast overgrowth).  Additionally, she really needs to be on a good dose of probiotics.

This would be a good initial probiotic for Layla:

  • HLC Neonate Powder Pharmax – use the tip of your clean finger or small spoon (gelato tasting spoons work well) and dip it into this powder for daily use.  You can put the spoon right into her mouth or dab the powder onto your nipple just as you are getting ready to nurse her.  Then follow it with a little breast milk or food.  Do this 3 times daily for two of days, then increase to 4 times daily for a couple of weeks until she gets better, then go back to 3 times daily.

After you go through this she will probably be past her 1st birthday, so then I would put her on this: HLC High Potency Pharmax

For additional support, please consider adding these:

  • Baby Vitamin D drops by Carlson – 1-2 drops per day.  Place one drop onto a pacifier or mother’s nipple and allow the baby to suck for at least 30 seconds.  This is to help her immune system, you could go back to 1 drop when she is doing better.

If you can’t get her to eat a teaspoon of liver each day, then please give her this for the essential antiinflamatory fats and vitamin A:

Finest Pure Cod Liver Oil – Here is a guide on dosing:

Age 0-12 months: 5-10 lbs. = 1 ml. (1/5 teaspoon daily)
11-20 lbs. = 2 ml.  (apx 1/2 teaspoon)
21-25 lbs. = 3 ml. (apx 1/2-1 teaspoon)
26-35 lbs. = 4 ml. (apx 1 teaspoon)

A good probiotic for you:

  • HLC Intensive Capsules Pharmax – start by taking 1 cap daily for 2 days, then increase to 2 caps daily for 2 weeks.  Then go back to one cap per day.  You should get 2 bottles to last you, each bottle has 30 caps.

Here are a couple of topical creams to get for Layla:

  • Cicatrisan Cream by Unda Seroyal – this cream is helpful against fungal/viral/bacterial skin issues.  This is is fine to apply for a young infant.  I double checked with Seroyal before recommending this to you to be sure.
